This is the only national flag in the world that is not square or rectangular. For the Hindus, a triangle represents the ‘Dharma’ (moral law and religious virtues). On the flag, white and black (colors of death) are contrasted with red (color of happiness and the rhododendron, the national flower). The sun and moon keep the memory of the mythical sun and moon dynasty that ruled when Nepal came into being. The flag has a blue border, a symbol of peace. The Nepalese motto is therefore: “Act so that the nation remains prosperous and lively, as long as the sun and moon shine in the firmament”. Another national symbol is the ‘Himalayan monal’, better known in Nepal as the danphe or danfe. It is a beautiful pheasant that lives above 3500 m. altitude.
